The EU is planning to become climate-neutral by 2050. The Fit for 55 package is a renewed strategy to strengthen its fight against climate change, incorporating a revision of the Emission Trading System (ETS) and the introduction of a carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM). These tools are designed to strike the best balance between minimizing carbon emissions in the region and preserving production competitiveness. In addition to these measures, the EU is setting new goals to exert pressure on all stakeholders.
In this context, the European Union updated the Renewable Energy Directive (REDIII) on November 20. In line with the REPowerEU Package presented after the Ukraine War, the renewable energy target set under the European Green Deal for 2021, binding for 2030, has been increased to 42.5%. Furthermore, the target to raise the share of renewable energy to 45% by 2030 has also been approved.
In summary, the goals can be outlined as follows:
Increasing the use of renewable energy in buildings to 49%.
Annual increment of renewable energy usage in industry by 1.6%.
Aiming for at least 29% renewable energy usage in transportation.
