"Best Before Date" and "Use By Date" - Understanding the Difference

"Best Before Date" and "Use By Date" - Understanding the Difference:

In the products we purchase, whether it's food or cosmetic items, we often come across labels indicating either the "Best Before Date" or the "Use By Date," specifying the recommended or mandatory dates for consuming the products. However, generally, we tend to perceive these dates as interchangeable. Yet, there is a significant distinction between the two.

To maintain the quality and safety of foods, and simultaneously reduce food waste, it's crucial to understand the information provided on food labels, particularly the "Best Before Date" and "Use By Date."

"Use By Date": This is related to the safety of the food or product.
"Best Before Date": This is related to the quality of the food or product.

The "Use By Date" indicates the last date by which a food item can be safely consumed. On the other hand, the "Best Before Date" signifies the date until which the food is expected to retain its optimal taste, quality, texture, and nutritional value.

Even after the "Best Before Date," the food can still be consumed, but there might be a decrease in quality and taste.

It's essential to note that the "Best Before Date" is not a safety concern; it is an indicator of the food's quality (freshness, texture, taste, and nutritional value).

After the "Best Before Date," if the food has been stored correctly, the packaging is intact, and it has been stored in suitable conditions, it can still be consumed safely for an extended period.

Here lies a crucial dilemma: food waste. In an era where access to food is becoming a growing concern, we are simultaneously witnessing an increase in food waste.

See, Smell, Taste:

After the "Best Before Date," you can use your own judgment to decide if the food is still good. Use your senses: see, smell, taste! If you don't notice any changes, you can consume the product even after the recommended date. It's important to highlight that relying on the "Best Before Date" alone does not guarantee food safety.

Avoiding waste and making decisions about consuming or discarding food after the "Best Before Date" requires attention to details and using your own sensory perceptions.

In the WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) 2022 study, it was found that storing five different products in the refrigerator below 5°C increased their shelf life by at least three times compared to storing them at room temperature.

Understanding the difference between "Use By Date" and "Best Before Date" can contribute to reducing food waste.
